Eddie Bravo, known around the world as the founder of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, is at it again with the creation of Combat Jiu Jitsu, or CJJ. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu for those of you not in the know is an off-shoot of BJJ, with an emphasis on unconventional techniques  (e.g. rubber guard, Twister) without a gi. So I guess it makes sense that Bravo, already an advocate for more realistic BJJ, would come up with CJJ. So what in the world is it? In short, it’s BJJ with punches. But don’t just take my word for it.

In an interview with BJPenn.com, Bravo elaborates on the concept of CJJ: Read the rest of this entry »

UFC 146 was great entertainment to say the least. After reading about the fighters who took the biggest dumps (sorry Mayhem) yesterday, I’m sure everyone wants to know who gets my props from the weekend. Take a look below at the guys that I think came out smelling like a rose at UFC 146, and the ones who made me jump out of my seat–causing more than one verbal warning from the chubby waitress who was not impressed with my performance.

Paul Sass. I’ll keep this one short and sweet. Paul’s Ass takes a figurative Jump in my book for one reason—he kept Jakob Volkmann from getting his hands on the microphone. ‘Nuff said.

Junior Dos Santos. Beautiful fight for JDS. He further displayed his Read the rest of this entry »

Well we didn’t have to wait too long to find out who Wanderlei Silva would be fighting at UFC 147. Despite our speculation, Rich Franklin will be stepping in for the injured Vitor Belfort in the headliner in Brazil. The UFC confirmed it today.

Silva, fresh off a win over Cung Le was teamed against Belfort in the Brazilian version of The Ultimate Fighter. This was set to be a rematch that goes way back to 1998, when Belfort made quick work of the Axe Murderer.

Franklin was scheduled to fight Le at UFC 148, but obviously has bigger fish to fry with Silva. You will remember Franklin has already defeated Silva–back at UFC 99.  He most recently was beaten by Forrest Griffin over a year ago. Likewise, Silva has had his ups Read the rest of this entry »

Joseph “Leonidas” Henle is coming to the Maximum Fighting Championship with a message.

He has been waiting for a stiff challenge for some time, and now faced with the biggest step up in competition of his career, Henle is eager to prove himself.

“The last three or four guys I’ve fought, I knew I was the better guy and my opponent knew I was the better guy,” Henle explained. Read the rest of this entry »

UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste was arrested over the weekend for domestic abuse, and later showed up at UFC 146. TMZ has more details of the incident. It looks like her boyfriend, Praveen Chandra was also arrested and there was a little more drama than originally thought.

Here’s what TMZ has learned. The couple began arguing in a limo over text messages Chandra had sent to other women. Arianny proceeded to kick him in the face. And that wasn’t all. The two then went to their hotel room Read the rest of this entry »

From the “could’ve seen this coming” department (all readers should collectively roll their eyes while reading this) is this little note about Rousimar Palhares. Apparently—and obviously—he wasn’t quite himself during the Alan Belcher fight. You remember the Alan Belcher fight right? The one where Palhares tries to leg lock Belcher, but couldn’t lock it in…and as a result got his head caved in by Belcher? Yes, that one.

Well there’s a simple explanation for that. He was terribly sick, according to Palhares. “I couldn’t do anything,” Paul Harris told Tatame. “I was too sick. I don’t really wanna talk about it so it doesn’t sound like an excuse and I’m not Read the rest of this entry »

UFC 146 was exactly what we thought it would be. Lots of bombs being thrown and plenty of fill-in fights due to the series of early finishes. If there were any new prospective fans out there watching for the first time, A) they probably enjoyed it and B) thankfully Stefan Struve showed the newbies that not every fight ends due to a vicious knockout. Probably the worst job of the night–aside from Mayhem Miller’s stylist–was the guy who had to mop up after Antonio Silva donated about 10 gallons of plasma. Still, that guy didn’t make the list of Big Dumps at UFC 146. But these four people weren’t that fortunate. Here are my Big Dumps of the night.

Mayhem Miller. Could it get any worse for this guy? First he gets destroyed by Michael Bisping in the stand up game; then he gets manhandled by C.B. Dollaway on the ground. That combo alone with garner the poor bastard some negative press. But add several additional poor decisions and you have a guy born to head our “Big Dump” Read the rest of this entry »

We are very pleased to announce that ring girl, model and former Marine Shannon Ihrke will be joining the VigilanteMMA team this summer. You’ve probably seen Shannon’s work as ring girl for ProElite, or perhaps in Maxim Magazine. And soon, you’ll be able to see her right here at VigilanteMMA. Shannon will be pulling double duty here, as she’ll have a recurring role as guest columnist, as well as providing our fans with a regular video blog discussing all things MMA.

“I’m so excited to get started with VigilanteMMA,” Ihrke told us yesterday. “It’s like a breath of fresh air to have somewhere to vent my thoughts on MMA, fighters, and so much more!” Something many people may not realize, is that Shannon had been an Read the rest of this entry »

From the first day an athlete got paid to swing a bat, shoot a ball or tackle someone, the fans have had a fascination with athlete’s salaries. And we as MMA fans are no different. Maybe that’s why MMAJunkie releases fighter salaries after each and every UFC event. Or maybe they do it to give fodder for us lowly MMA blogs? Either way, there’s some really fascinating stuff coming out of UFC 146. The salaries ranged from 200K to 10K, with the biggest winners being JDS, Mir and Velasquez. No big surprises there. However, if you dig a little deeper past the headliners, you’ll see there were some discrepancies that would make your head spin. And I’m here to point them out. With that, the best and worst bargains for UFC 146… Read the rest of this entry »

Dana White just can’t catch a break can he? His unbeatable Light Heavyweight Champ infamously found his match in the form of a 50 foot oak tree, his long time ring girl needs a ring girl herself for her in-home fights and Vitor Belfort just broke his hand (presumably still a side-effect of Andy’s front kick) and is out against his re-match with fellow TUF coach Wanderlei Silva next month. Is this the UFC or Shakespeare?

At any rate, it appears that Joe Silva and Co are trying to come up with some other options for Wand, but they’re going to have to move quick, as the fight is scheduled for June 23rd. And to make matters worse, with a lot of the top middleweights already booked, there’s not a lot of options out there. That said, being the company guy that I am, I thought I’d help out and offer some suggestions: Read the rest of this entry »
