With seven fights and four hours scheduled, this PPV looks like the spectacle they want it to be. Here are some questions I’ll attempt to answer…because quite frankly, I know you’re all dying to hear what I think about Ben Henderson’s neck size. I’ll even break out the first installment of something I think will stick around for awhile…Big Jump/Big Dump.

Is Ben Henderson trying to make a mockery of my ‘Small Head, Small Neck’ theory? Around the office, I’m known as a crackpot. That’s solely based on my insistence that some fighters have a distinct advantage over their opponent because of the size of their heads. My belief is that a guy with a huge head—like Tito Ortiz, Roy Nelson and Chris Leben—is much more difficult to knock out; while a guy with no neck—Jim Miller, Sean Sherk—are nearly impossible to submit. Well, add Bendo to the growing list of guys trying to prove me wrong—along with Antonio Silva (who’s proving the exact opposite). Henderson has a smallish head and a long neck, but yet, he refuses to be finished. C’mon Ben, give me a break!

Could Rampage’s entrance steal the show? We all know how beloved Rampage Jackson was/is in Japan. And despite the nine Japanese fighters on the card, Jackson could actually be the fan favorite. When you consider the placement of his match on the lineup (co-main event), the overall importance and feel of the fight could be coming to a head right about the time Rampage makes his appearance. My biggest hope is that with a 4-hour window, they show the full entrance.

Could the hometown legends wind up 0-3? Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi and Kid Yamamoto have all seen rapid declines. It’s great for them to be on the big stage for the UFC’s triumphant return to Japan. But, let’s face it; they could all be walking out of the cage with L’s. Combined, they are 2-8 in the UFC. Yikes.

How many times will Cheick Kongo be knocked out before defeating Mark Hunt? If you look at Kongo’s official record, it says he’s never been knocked out. I disagree. I’m pretty sure Pat Barry KO’d Kongo at least twice at UFC Live last year. Hunt has the firepower to do it again, and has a penchant for “walk off” KOs (one against Tuchscherer and an attempt against Rothwell). If he tries it against Kongo, he better watch out. Cheick could do another Undertaker impression and come back from the dead when Hunt isn’t looking.

Will WEC outshine UFC? With Ben Henderson challenging Frankie Edgar for the Lightweight title and Anthony Pettis wanting to make a case for being ‘next in line’ it could happen. When WEC was merged into the UFC, critics were still in the camp that said WEC was the minor leagues. A few guys, namely Henderson, Pettis and Donald Cerrone have made a serious impact in the only cross-over division, 155. For the loyal WEC followers, this may be the biggest night of all. Wins by both former WEC champs Saturday could very well mean a rematch to their amazing 5-rounder that closed the curtain on their old promotion.

How will rowdy Americans mix with conservative Japanese fans? I can’t wait for the first crowd shot that shows a group of well dressed Japanese fans quietly applauding their favorite fighters; then all of a sudden a liquored up, Ed Hardy clad, tatted muscle head jumps in front of the camera to flex his biceps and yell the standard, “Yeaaaaah!” over and over into the camera. I can’t wait.

Big Jump? No one stands to gain more than Joe Lauzon Saturday night. If he’s able to upset Pettis, he will have successfully transitioned from solid middle of the pack lightweight all the way to highly ranked contender. The Guillard/Pettis double dip would forever change the way we view Lauzon.

Big Dump? I mentioned it above, but Yoshihiro Akiyama is ripe for this dubious label. He’s fighting in his homeland but the cards seem stacked against him. New weight class? A history of cardio issues? 3 fight losing streak? His opponent, Jake Shields just a year ago was riding a 6 year winning streak? Those aren’t the best odds for Sexyama. A loss would certainly mean sayonara for him. If Shields could control Dan Henderson on the ground for 5 rounds, don’t you think he can do the same to the newly 170 pound Akiyama?Plus he’s losing his looks (GASP!)

Fighting out of the Chicago area, Reardanz found himself on Bellator’s radar after making a splash with two 1st round submission wins in one week last October. Tes, you heard that correctly…in one week. His reward was an offer from Bellator he just couldn’t refuse. He will be stepping into the cage against 11-2-1 Mike Corey March 9.

VigilanteMMA: Bobby, when doing some research and looking at your previous fights I noticed that you don’t take lots of long breaks. Seems like you are ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Bobby Reardanz: I love to fight, and I love this sport! I don’t understand why others don’t fight as much as me. It’s just a sport and you have to think about other professional athletes out there, for example: NFL players play every week, banged up or not. NHL and NBA players play 3-4 times a week and even MLB players play 5-6 times a week. So I am not sure why most fighters only want to fight once every 3 months.

VigilanteMMA: Do you think the high frequency of your fights give you an advantage?

Bobby: Absolutely, it’s a huge advantage! No cage rust, I’m always in shape, and I’m always mentally ready to fight anyone, anywhere!

VigilanteMMA: What was your immediate reaction when you received the call from Bellator?

Bobby: My reaction was ‘Finally! 3rd time’s a charm!’ I was referred to Bellator the first time by a UFC fighter that I fought for in the past. They took me for the fight, then shortly after realized I was from Illinois and they wanted a local Louisiana fighter. Then the second time there was too much delay in communication between the manager that got me the fight and Bellator and then they booked another fighter! Everything happens for a reason, and I get my shot at the big leagues right here in my back yard in front of all my family, friends, and fans! So it’s worth the wait for sure.

VigilanteMMA: Is this just a one shot deal with Bellator?

Bobby: It’s a 3 fight contract with them but I’m still able to take fights with other promotions with permission from Bellator. This fight March 9th is for the alternate spot in the 145 Bellator tournament. So after I defeat Mike Corey, I’ll have a shot to get in the big tourney.

VigilanteMMA: I have been noticing on Facebook that you have really ramped up training, leading into this fight. Tell us about it.

Bobby: Camp has been awesome! I have had a lot of support and a lot of help. First is the support of my wife. Then my family, friends, and church family have been there for me in excitement and in prayers. Then my coaches and training partners have been awesome. I’m still a student of the sport and try and be a sponge every single class. I want to send a shout out to Steve Colon at Colon MMA, and Keith Wisniewski, Darren Elkins, and Justin Wisniewski at Duneland Vale Tudo; and Brian Ebersole for teaching me and pushing me every day he was available. Then all my training partners that push me hard like Josh Shockley, Darren Elkins, Eddie Wineland, Lloyd Carter, Lance Surma, Chase Beebe, Mike Lullo, Ricardo Lamas, and all the awesome fighters in those gyms.

VigilanteMMA: WOW!! Sounds like you have really surrounded yourself with the right people.
I also heard that you had a run in with the local police during camp? Details please?

Bobby: Funny story. I was training a lot with local UFC fighter Brian Ebersole, who moved to Australia and was in town on a family visit and was helping out a local High School wrestling team, and found time for training me…thank you, Brian! Anyways, on a strength and conditioning night we were at a local hill that is usually used for sledding and he had me doing hill sprints; and in between sprint sets he had me doing different grappling cardio. We were doing some grappling and they were getting intense and the cops showed up because a neighbor thought we were fighting in the street! It was funny explaining ourselves.

VigilanteMMA: Your opponent at Bellator 60 is Mike Corey, a 6 year veteran of the pro circuit. Can you give us a little scouting report?

Bobby: He is an awesome fighter, very well rounded, and will be my toughest fight to date. Plus there are no chumps in Bellator, so if any fighter in Bellator tells you they have an easy fight, they probably have been hit in the head too many times.

VigilanteMMA: The fight will be March 9th at Bellator 60 live from Hammond, Indiana. How do you see it going down?

Bobby: My prediction is definitely a win. I believe the Lord gave me this opportunity for a reason and I will fight my heart out to give him a win. As always for every win, all the honor and glory goes to him, and I’ll be there representing Jesus and planting seeds of Christianity as always.

VigilanteMMA: Who are some people within the sport that you look up to?

Bobby: I look up to a lot of different people in this sport for different reasons. A lot of my trainers especially Steve Colon and Brian Ebersole who have given up a lot of their personal time to train me and not ask for a single thing in return. I look up to the fighters that have deep Christian roots and are not scared to tell everyone like Ben Henderson or Jon Jones. And my first 2 MMA heroes Randy Couture and Forrest Griffin.

VigilanteMMA: Last question…We love this one. You are in a dark alley and have to fight your way out? You can only have one man or woman in your corner to help you. Who is it and why?

Bobby: Jesus Christ! He helps me with every hardship I’ve ever been through and always has an open hand reaching out for me. He died on the cross for my sins and is my best friend.

VigilanteMMA: Alright Bobby, thanks again for your time and best of luck against Mike Corey on March 9th at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN for BELLATOR 60.

Joe Lauzon has been fighting for the UFC since 2006, knocking out legend Jens Pulver in under a minute at only 22 years old. He is now 8-3 in the UFC. He owns five Submission of the Night honors. He earned three Fight of the Night bonuses. He just knocked off sure-fire title contender Melvin Guillard. He also enters his fight with Anthony Pettis as a 2-1 underdog.

Probably no one else on the entire UFC 144 card stands to gain as much as Lauzon. Perusing our latest rankings, he is nowhere to be found on our top 10 list at lightweight. Yet he enters Saitama, Japan with undoubtedly the biggest fight of his career. Pettis is technically still the WEC champ, although that title no longer exists. Many fans and experts are leaning toward Pettis becoming the next title challenger following Saturday’s main event between Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson.

Lauzon looks to be the spoiler for the second straight time. Back in October, Melvin Guillard bounced into the cage a huge favorite over Lauzon and had all but wrapped up a title shot. But something funny happened to Guillard—he tapped only 47 seconds later. In fact, of his last 3 wins, all of them have come by way of 1st round submission. Only George Sotiropoulos managed to buck that trend.

If J-Lau happens to upset Pettis, he would certainly be in the running for title contention. At a minimum, he would make his first top 10 appearance. Beating Guillard and Pettis consecutively might actually be the most impressive 2-fight streak (it would actually be 3 in a row all together) in the entire ultra-competitive lightweight division—save for Edgar’s 4-fight unbeaten streak against BJ Penn and Gray Maynard.

So despite quite a bit of “bonus material” scheduled for UFC in Japan—7 main card fights instead of the usual 5—this one is no novelty. It’s no shout out to Pride. And it doesn’t feature any hometown heroes. But it’s very likely that Joe Lauzon stands to gain more than any other fighter at UFC 144.

Actually you don’t even have to be looking for it. It’s all over the place. Tim Sylvia has started a major campaign to return to the UFC. Twitter, the Underground, you name it, Tim’s there…and so are his fans. Every day there are seemingly hundreds of fans sending Dana White notes to give Sylvia another chance.

For his part, Sylvia is also banging the drum. He is encouraging fans to make the push to the UFC, especially to White. Just a week ago Sylvia recorded a video claiming he’s ready to return and that he could defeat most of the fighters currently in the UFC’s heavyweight division.

“I was in the UFC back when it was five to six shows a year. Now they do shows every three weeks, so they have to put guys in like Morecraft, Joey Beltran, Stefan Struve, the list goes on and on. I don’t understand why any of these guys are in the UFC. To be frankly honest, I think I knock them out in the first round. I can beat 80 percent of the guys in the UFC.”

Sylvia hasn’t fought in the UFC since losing an interim title fight to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira back at UFC 81. For the record, it was awarded Fight of the Night. He followed that up with a disappointing loss to Fedor in Affliction, and an even more disappointing 9 second one punch KO loss to boxer Ray Mercer. Many critics point to the Mercer fight as the end of his significance.

So far, White has not been open to a return. Here’s what White had to say.

“I have no beef with Tim Sylvia whatsoever, I have nothing against the guy, but I say it all the time, that was when the division was the weakest, when he was champion. And for him to make a statement like he could come back and beat 80-percent of the fighters in the UFC? I don’t know what Tim Sylvia’s been doing. The last time I saw him, he got knocked out by a 50-year-old boxer in like 10 seconds. Who’d he beat? The guy’s just out there trying to get back into the UFC, trying to make a living, I get it, but he fought in the UFC when the UFC heavyweight division was its weakest. Him and Arlovski were knocking each other out every weekend.”

In fairness, Sylvia—a two time former UFC champion—has gone on a 6-1 streak since that loss with five finishes. I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that Sylvia could compete in the UFC today and probably knock some guys out, as he claims. While some people will mock Sylvia for calling out guys like Struve and Cheick Kongo (who had a spat on Twitter recently), but would a Struve/Sylvia fight really be that easy to pick?

I’m not saying Sylvia should be given a free pass to the UFC just because he wants to be there. But does he deserve at least a little consideration based on his past? He’s been in the cage with names like Mir, Couture, Emelianenko, Nogueira and Arlovski. And by my count, he’s taken part in nine UFC heavyweight title fights.

If you want to go by precedent, aging former stars (Sylvia’s only 35 by the way), have made their way into the UFC, and continue to be employed despite spotty recent success. Mirko Cro Cop has lost 4 of has last 6 fights; Mark Hunt was given a fight at UFC 127 despite six straight defeats; Tito Ortiz is set to face Forrest Griffin at some point this year even though he has exactly one win in his last seven fights.Japanese legend Takanori Gomi fights this weekend with a 1-3 UFC record. I think you get the point. It’s been done before.

I’d love to hear from Sylvia supporters and detractors. Should the Maine-iac be given another shot in the UFC?

Earlier this week we did a fun feature looking into the dramatic changes the welterweight division has seen in the past year or so. It got enough response that I decided to look at another weight class—the heavyweights. Despite fighters entering the cage as little as once or twice per year, a 12 month period can still be an eternity in the ever changing world of MMA. Let’s see how the climate has changed in the top 10 since January of 2011.

1. Cain Velasquez (current ranking: 3). Cain was on top of the world a year ago after defeating the behemoth Brock Lesnar for the world title, a fight that made Cain a superstar. Since that fight, things haven’t been as stellar. He suffered a torn rotator cuff which sidelined him for over a year. When he finally returned, he lasted only a minute in the cage with new champ Junior Dos Santos. Still firmly planted in the top 3, Cain will fight Frank Mir this summer.

2. Brock Lesnar (currently unranked). Fresh off the loss to Velasquez, Brock’s stock tumbled slightly a year ago, but not that much. His standing was still as solid as ever, havaing defeated Couture, Mir and Carwin consecutively leading up to dropping the belt. However, another bout of diverticulitis and a tough loss to Alistair Overeem led Brock to announce his retirement from the cage. If he ever decides to return, I’d expect him to be back in the top 5 instantly.

3. Junior Dos Santos (current ranking: 1). One sided victories over solid pros Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson propelled JDS in to the upper echelon of heavyweights by last January. And as we know, he’s done nothing but take yet another step as the top dog in the world. I guess handing Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez beatings will do that to a career. Although JDS has a full skill set, he’s probably the closest thing we have to a one-dimensional champ, based solely on the fact that he primarily punches his way to victory. Overeem is next.

4. Shane Carwin (current ranking: 7). At the time, Carwin was known as one of the heaviest punchers in the sport and had just one loss on his record. As discussed, Dos Santos punished him for a second loss in as many fights. Carwin likely fits among the top 5 or so, but inactivity has hampered his ranking. Back surgery will keep him out until mid year, at which time he could earn back his spot with just one win.

5. Fedor Emeliankenko (currently unranked). Sometimes the fall from grace happens overnight. After suffering his first true loss to Fabricio Werdum, the luster faded a bit, dropping him from #1 to #5. And things never got better for Fedor. A month after these rankings came out, he dropped one to Antonio Silva; and yet another one to Dan Henderson. His two subsequent wins over Ishii and Monson have gotten him back to his winning ways, but certainly not far enough to appear back in the top 10.

6. Alistair Overeem (current ranking: 2). While sitting at #6, Overeem was still considered a wildcard of sorts. Skeptics felt he wasn’t fighting a level of competition proportionate with his status. Todd Duffee and Brett Rogers were not Cain and JDS, they said. Since that time, he defeated Werdum and Lesnar to prove he belonged. Now at #2, he waits for Dos Santos and his crack at the UFC world title.

7. Fabricio Werdum (current ranking: 6). Riding his historic win over Fedor in 2010, Werdum broke into everyone’s top 10. But he waited an entire year before reentering the cage, and was met with negative results. A bad loss to Overeem had many questioning his place in the rankings. His UFC debut helped move him back into favor, defeating Roy Nelson. He says he wants to fight for a title, but to do so, he’ll have to put together at least another couple wins.

8. Frank Mir (current ranking: 5). After losing to Carwin badly and then winning in ho-hum fashion against Mirko Cro Cop, many questioned Mir’s relevancy in the UFC at the time these rankings came out. To his credit, the 2-time champ bounced back into the mix with more impressive wins against Nelson and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. So yes, he’s back in the mix. In fact, he’s supposedly worked himself into a #1 contenders match with Velasquez this summer. Not bad for a guy I wrote off a year ago.

9. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (current ranking: 9). Last January, Big Nog was ranked #9 primarily because of who he is. After all, he’d only fought once in the previous year and a half—a quick KO loss to Velasquez. Today, he remains ranked in the exact same spot, primarily due to a perceived lack of depth in the HW division. He came up with a huge win over fast-rising Brendan Schaub, followed by another bad loss to Mir, this time breaking his arm in the process. If and when he returns, he could be relegated to a highly ranked stepping stone.

10. Antonio Silva (current ranking: 10). Fresh off victories over Arlovski and Mike Kyle, Silva found his way to the top 10. But it wasn’t until just after the rankings came out that he made his big move by defeating Fedor. He thoroughly dominated the legend, making a case for becoming the favorite to win the Strikeforce Grand Prix. Shortly thereafter, he took a devastating loss to Daniel Cormier, knocking him back down a rung. Still, for reasons just discussed, Silva maintains a top 10 ranking, for the fact that no one else seems to fit.

Many times, you’ll see the bottom few fighters drop off the list, and be replaced by other fighters of similar quality. Not the case this time. Instead we saw only two fighters drop off, but they happened to be pretty big names—Fedor and Lesnar. That means somebody moved up. Let’s see who.

Josh Barnett (current ranking: 4). Barnett was most likely excluded based on the fact that his previous fights came against guys named Mighty Mo and Geronimo Dos Santos. But his results in the Strikeforce Grand Prix shot him way up the list. One-sided wins over Brett Rogers and Sergei Kharitonov put Barnett into the finals in a manner that looked too easy to believe. With his lofty #4 ranking, he needs a win against Cormier in the finals to earn his long-awaited return to the UFC.

Daniel Cormier (current ranking: 8). Cormier wasn’t ranked last January for one main reason—no one knew who he was. His biggest win was against a guy called Devin Cole on a Strikeforce Challengers card. Following that however, Cormier put a punishing beating on Dan Monson and then pulled off one of the upsets of the year by knocking out Antonio Silva. He continues to show high level skills and has many people talking about Cormier defeating Barnett and going on to face either Dos Santos or Jon Jones. Pretty lofty goals for a guy we didn’t pay any attention to a year ago.

Ariel Helwani confirmed last night that rumors of Nate Marquardt’s return to Zuffa are accurate. He signed with Strikeforce to take a major role in their welterweight division. In fact, his promotional debut could in fact be against Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce championship. The timeframe for his return is presumed to be around May or June.

Signing with Strikeforce is Marquardt’s chance to reinvent himself in the eyes of Zuffa management. He was released last summer for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone. To make matters worse, the whole scene took place the day of weigh-ins, which jeopardized the entire event—Marquardt was in the main event of a UFC on Versus card along with Rick Story. It was announced immediately that Marquardt was released from the UFC.

He signed with BAMMA and a fight was scheduled. However, the fight never took place and Marquardt moved on from the organization. This will be his first fight since March of 2011. Woodley is 10-0 professionally and has stepped to the top of the Strikeforce roster despite some criticism for his wrestling-first attack. His most recent win was against Jordan Mein in January.

With Marquardt returning to Zuffa, it appears the olive branch has been extended. Marquardt has always had a nice guy image and perhaps that’s the reason—along with his year-long exile—for his signing. Fans are forgiving by nature, and if Nate manages to remain free of controversy and put on some good fights, his reentry to the UFC seems within reach.

It includes backstage footage following UFC 143. The most interesting clips revolve around two fighters who lost their fights–Nick Diaz and Roy Nelson. Obviously Diaz thought he defeated Condit so I won’t go into it too much. But the most entertaining part was Nelson. Big Country thought he should have won the fight against Fabricio Werdum.

Our first glimpse of Nelson came with the line, “I thought I fuckin won at least one round. I thought I won two rounds.” He wasn’t happy. Of course the judges disagreed. They awarded the fight to Werdum 30-27 on all cards. He wasn’t done either.

Later when we are watching Diaz describe the fight from his point of view, we could hear Nelson telling someone else, “I thought I probably won the 2nd round,” and followed it up with, “I thought I probably stole the 3rd.” It was funny seeing the give and take between Diaz and Nelson in this scene as both guys were trying to act interested in the other’s misfortune. But just as quickly as Diaz asked Roy if he lost, he switched to telling everyone how he was robbed. At one point it seemed both were speaking simultaneously–to each other–about how the judges screwed them. Neither was listening to a word the other was saying.

Finally back in the concourse, Diaz was still holding court. This time Lorenzo Fertitta was present. Suddenly almost out of nowhere, Nelson appeared on camera again. This time saying, “All I know is I thought I won the 2nd and 3rd round. I don’t know what these judges are watching. They panned to show Fertitta’s reaction, which was laughter. Roy pressed on. “Seriously. If you put someone on queer street and they’re like this; that’s effective striking.” Lorenzo then must have realized it wasn’t a joke and stopped laughing.

I like Nelson a lot and I don’t even blame him for thinking he won. I can only imagine that while the fight’s going on, it is very difficult to also be a judge–an objective one at least. Nonetheless, watch the video. Not only is it admittedly funny, but the behind the scenes access is very interesting as well.

What a difference a year makes, especially in MMA. And in this case the welterweight division. With longtime champ, Georges St-Pierre on the shelf for a while, things really started shaking. It was just over a year ago that Dan Hardy was considered the top threat to GSP’s belt. Today, Hardy is walking the aisles after UFC events looking for quarters. Let’s take a quick look at the welterweight rankings a little over a year ago—the end of 2010 and see how much things have changed.

November, 2010 Rankings…

1. Georges St-Pierre (current rank: 1). OK, I guess some things do stay the same. GSP was on top of the world with a recent win over Hardy. He would go on to handle Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields and continue to be #1, despite his recent injury. He’ll stay at #1 until somebody can finally beat him—no one’s done that since 2007, and that was a fluke.

2. Jon Fitch (current rank: 6). Fitch was long believed to best fighter at 170 without the initials GSP. While that may still be true, he’s hit a bit of a dry spell, going winless since these rankings came out. A draw (albeit a punishing one) with BJ Penn and a KO loss to Johny Hendricks sent his career path a slightly different direction.

3. Josh Koscheck (current rank: 5). As mentioned, Koscheck lost to GSP to close 2010, but has rebounded somewhat. A 1st round KO of legend Matt Hughes and a sluggish decision over Mike Pierce have at least set him back on track. If GSP ever loses the belt, Koscheck would be among the top contenders for whoever the kingpin is at that time. If GSP remains the champ, Kos can forget about a 3rd chance.
4. Jake Shields (current rank: 9). Like some of the others, Shields’ stock has dropped significantly since these rankings came out. We gave him the benefit of the doubt in a controversial win over Martin Kampmann, but two straight losses after that took the luster off the former Strikeforce middleweight champ. He’s 0-2 since we posted these and is one loss away from dropping completely off the charts—and likely dropping out of relevancy in the UFC.

5. Nick Diaz (current rank: 3). Finally someone who went up in the rankings! Strong wins against Santos, Daley and Penn moved Diaz all the way to #2—until recently. He’s proven without a doubt he belongs in the upper echelon of the 170s now that he’s entered the UFC. But if you’re looking for a trifecta of troubling events, how ‘bout 1) his close loss to Condit 2) his supposed “retirement” and 3) his positive drug test. That’ll put his career and #3 ranking in temporary limbo.

6. Carlos Condit (current rank: 2). Condit just made a move up to #6 on our rankings after obliterating Dan Hardy. Honestly his two previous wins should have told us he was the real deal, beating Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger. But we didn’t know how tough those two would become. Now we do. Condit is the new Interim champion and is saying he’ll wait for a fight with GSP. We’ll see how that plays out, but if there are any setbacks for St-Pierre, look for Condit to fight Ellenberger.

7. Martin Kampmann (currently unranked). Kampmann’s loss to Shields was so controversial that he didn’t drop at all in these rankings. But what did drop him out of the top 10 was another loss, this time to Diego Sanchez. Granted it was just as close and controversial as the Shields fight, but two in a row tends to move your stock in a negative way. A bounce back decision over Rick Story and his upcoming fight with Thiago Alves could move him right back up.

8. BJ Penn (current rank: 10). Penn was originally ranked at 8 mainly due to his reputation and name. He confirmed our thoughts with a very quick finish of Matt Hughes right before these rankings came out. He looked like he’d make another run. But then he got pummeled twice—a draw with Fitch and a loss to Diaz. With his future up in the air and this division adding new contenders seemingly every day, I would guess Penn’s stay on this list is a short one.

9. Thiago Alves (currently unranked). Alves was considered a top contender for some time here despite two losses in a row. That’s because those two L’s came at the hands of the undisputed #1 and 2 guys in the world—GSP and Fitch. Since then, he’s been kinda run-of-the-mill. Wins over John Howard and Papi Abedi didn’t outweigh his loss to Rick Story. With the influx of talent at welterweight, he’ll have to beat Kampmann to find his way back to our top 10. Paul Daley (currently unranked). Leading up to these rankings, Daley was on a mission. Two fights since being ousted from the UFC and two big wins. A week later he would plant himself even more firmly in the top 10 with a KO of the year candidate over Scot Smith. But consecutive losses to Diaz and Tyron Woodley, followed by missing weight yet again left a bad impression on us and others. He might never return.

That’s lots of movement since November of 2010. Included are three fighters who dropped off the list, which means there must be three new ones to take their places. And here they are.

Jake Ellenberger (current rank: 4). By far our biggest mover. He’s gone 4-0 since these came out and he’s been steamrolling competition. Most impressive was a 1st round KO of Jake Shields and a unanimous decision over warrior Diego Sanchez. If you’re looking for a fast-rising bandwagon to jump on, jump on this one.

Rory MacDonald (current rank: 7). Only 22 years old, this guy is for real. Remember what he did to Nate Diaz? The fight that kept him out of the rankings in our original list was the fight we should all be thinking about. He was defeated by now-champ Carlos Condit with just seconds remaining in the fight. Had he made it through the round, MacDonald would have won the fight via decision and we could very well be talking about a 2012 fight with Rory and GSP.

Johny Hendricks (current rank: 8). Here’s another example of a guy flying up the charts. Wins over Mike Pierce and perennial #2 Fitch moved him up to 8, and possibly even further. In May he gets to fight #5 Koscheck in another challenging fight that would certainly label Hendricks as a “next in line” type of guy.

In an interview with Fighter’s Only, Rampage Jackson spoke about UFC 144, returning to Japan to face Ryan Bader, and had some especially harsh words for commentator Joe Rogan. When asked about a perfect scenario for his upcoming fight with Bader, Jackson said part of it would involve not doing an interview with “Joe Rogan’s fake ass.” He explained that he’d rather win the fight and “I’m gone, just Audi,” instead of being forced to talk with Rogan, because “most likely he’s been talking crap about you the whole time about how you don’t throw no leg kicks,” Jackson said.

He was even asked how a fight with Rogan would end. Predictably, Jackson said, “I think I’d beat the shit out of Joe Rogan.” He conceded that Rogan has good jiu jitsu and went on to explain how he knows that.

“You know he’s got good jiu-jitsu because he’s so biased (towards) jiu-jitsu guys. You can hear it in his voice. Whenever a guy is a jiu-jitsu fighter Joe Rogan might as well be like playing rusty trombone.” At this point in the video you really need to see it to appreciate it. Rampage goes on to mimic Rogan giving a rusty trombone to a top shelf jiu jitsu player. Hilarious.

He also said he can sometimes hear Rogan’s commentary from cage-side because “Joe Rogan has one of those girly high-ass voices, you can hear his ass sometimes,” he admits. “I just want to tell him to shut the fuck up sometimes. You want to call me one-dimensional, ok kiss my ass.”

Definitely watch the entire video because Rampage is always one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC to listen to. He combines humor in every interview, but at the same time, he’s no clown. His track record speaks to that. Jackson will fight Bader at UFC 144 in Japan this weekend.
