Diaz has an Extra “Fan” in his Corner at UFC 143 — Georges St-Pierre

We know all about the bad blood that has been flowing between Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre. Diaz has chastised GSP, accusing the champ of ducking him. Diaz hasn’t minced words, and for once, neither has St-Pierre. The only thing that stands between a fight to settle this real-life feud is Carlos Condit.  Condit could ruin everything by defeating Diaz for the interim welterweight belt this weekend.

St-Pierre finds himself in an unusual position. He hates Diaz so much that he will actually be pulling for him to defeat Condit, setting up a fight between himself and Diaz. It’s nothing personal against Condit, GSP states, but he really wants a crack at beating up Diaz. “I respect Carlos Condit, but I want Diaz to win,” St-Pierre said. “It will be a weird feeling, sitting at the Mandalay Bay wanting Nick Diaz to win. I want this fight with Diaz so badly, as badly as I wanted the title shot when I got down on my knees. I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won’t be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer.”

Condit has other plans, as he told St-Pierre on UFC Tonight on Fuel. “Well, Georges I hate to say it, but I’m looking to spoil your party, man,” Condit told him. “I’m looking to take it to Diaz, and [earn] the Interim belt.” Condit has to appreciate GSP’s stance and certainly shouldn’t take it as a personal jab.

“I am not personal friends with (Condit),” St-Pierre added, “but I know him a little and he’s a great person. I know a lot of people who know him well because we train with the same people, but I have only spoken with him a few times. He is a true mixed martial artist. I feel bad, it is weird that I want him to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz.”

A cynic could say that GSP is not-so-secretly pulling for Diaz because he thinks Condit poses a greater risk. A quick poll from my own circle of MMA associates confirms that that may in fact be true. St-Pierre’s wrestling-based attack is considered a tough matchup for Diaz, who has lost to wrestlers before. I think it goes beyond that. GSP has never been like this before. Usually mild mannered, he hardly has a bad thing to say about anyone. When he says he wants to fight Diaz in a bad way, I believe him. But as I said, Carlos Condit is no stepping stone. Saturday night will determine whether or not GSP gets his wish.

  1. I find it hard to believe anyone in MMA associates with you, or would consider you an “associate”… You missed me didn’t you little guy? Admit it it’s ok I won’t blush.

Anyways this is the first fight card in some time I jacked up about. Maybe it will rekindle my spark that died when UFC signed with Fox… Woah is me.

Deuces, my favorite associate! Where have you been? Although I agree this card will be sweet, I’d rather not think about the “spark” inside you. Keep that shit to yourself!
