Whenever we check our mailbag—and yes, it is an actual bag—we continually get the same wish from hundreds and hundreds of fans: Give Bobby Lashley a shot at the world title! Well folks, this is the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Bobby Lashley will finally be fighting for what’s rightfully his—a world title.
When I say World title, keep in mind I mean the Shark Fights heavyweight “world” title. His opponent will be the reigning champion Darrill Schoonover, whose nickname given to him by Rampage Jackson I will not repeat (but it rhymes with “fitties”). Schoonover won the belt back in May of 2009 and has defended it with a fervor ever since.
Well, that’s not exactly true either. Schoonover did win the belt back in 09, but really hasn’t defended it at all. In fact, his last fight in July snapped a 5 fight losing streak since winning the belt. If you include his TUF losses to Marcus Jones and James McSweeney, that makes seven losses in a row. How he could lose 7 straight times and still walk around with the belt is beyond me, but who am I to judge?
Lashley on the other hand has earned this shot from destroying freakshows like Bob Sapp and out of shape TUF washouts like Wes Sims. When he got humiliated by a guy who should be fighting at 205, Chad Griggs, he decided to play it safe. Next he took on a converted middleweight named John Ott, who took everything Lashley had including his dignity.
